Producer Visit: Lorenzo Piccin of Grifalco with Chaad Thomas of US Wine Imports
Saturday, September 21 2-3:30 p Please join us Saturday from 2:00–3:30 pm to explore Aglianico del Vulture! This tasting is free and no registration is required.
First cultivated in ancient Greece, Aglianico was brought by Greek settlers to ancient Cumae in southern Italy around 800 BC. It is one of Italy’s greatest grape varieties, prized for its richness and longevity, which is why it was dubbed “the Barolo of the South”. It buds early, and it is a late-ripening grape that thrives in hot, dry climates. In Basilicata, it has the distinction of being the region’s only DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Aglianico del Vulture, produced on the steep slopes of Monte Vulture, is a must-try for any Italian wine fans.
Lorenzo Piccin and his brother took over the reins at the family winery outside of Venosa just a few years ago, but the quality of their wine has gone from great to outstanding, perhaps even peerless. Focusing on cru selections from their estate vineyards, working the vineyards organically, and using minimal intervention in the cellar allow the volcanic terroir and fruit quality to shine. We’re delighted to have Lorenzo Piccin here to present the wines this Saturday, the 21st, and tell you the story of these amazing wines from the Basilicata’s Vulture Mountain region! Featured wines: 2016 Grifalco Aglianico del Vulture “Gricos” 2016 Grifalco Aglianico del Vulture “Grifalco” 2013 Grifalco Aglianico del Vulture “Damaschito”
